not required to cover the expense of providing drivers with a new one. >> reporter: the counterfeit air bags have all the markings and insignia of major car manufacturers, but the malfunction can be disastrous, from nondeployment to metal shrapnel flying through the area that is a potential for severe injury highly possible. >> safety is our number one priority here at the department of transportation. and we are very committed to keeping our passengers and our drivers safe in every condition of driving. >> reporter: there have not been any injuries or deaths, but if you've had your air bag replaced in the last three years by a repair shop not affiliated with a dealership, you are urged to have it checked by a certified oem shop. >> these seemingly genuine air bags are in fact shoddy fakes that pose a significant safety hazard when installed. >> reporter: one way to make sure you know the history of your car or one you're planning to buy is always check the car

the game is still in the eighth inning. st. louis 6, the washington nationals 0. on this historic day, the first day for play-off baseball in washington, and more than 70 years. and fans came in with such high hopes. they waited so long. they got the red towels. they went in and cheered when they could. well, they hoped to see more. here now, some reaction from me of the fans. the what do you think? >> it's very disappointing. but it was a great crowd. it was a lot of fun being out there today. disappointing with a loss. >> reporter: they haven't lost yet. they could come back. >> we could come back. disappointing start. >> i think we have a chance. >> reporter: you're leaving? >> yeah, well, we want to beat traffic. but we're going to go to the bar and watch it. >> reporter: even if they lose, they're down -- >> 5. >> reporter: 5-0 after six? >> yes. >> two out. >> reporter: what do you think? >> they have a chance. we're going to win.

but that's going to be going down behind a frontal boundary. temperatures ahead of that front, 70 in leesburg and 70 over towards annapolis. just gorgeous. here's the frontal boundary, making its way in. in through portions of west virginia. that front will move through. and it will cool things down again. western fairfax county, to the reston and herndon area, through your morning, how about this, temperatures 63 degrees by 7:00. looking good. under partly sunny skies. 57 degrees by 11:00. waking up tomorrow morning to a rather cool 43. some of you will be in the upper 30s tomorrow. we'll talk about the real cool air, when the coolest weather moves in in my forecast. the number of mentiingitis cases is still climbing today. at last count, the cdc reported 137 people had fungal meningitis from that medication. 12 victims have died, including one in maryland and one in virginia. the steroid shots commonly used

to treat back pain came from the new england compounding center in massachusetts. the company has recalled all of its products now. but doctors say more cases will be discovered in the coming weeks. the presidential politics now, mitt romney on a prolonged swing through the crucial swing state of ohio. new jersey governor chris christie is campaigning alongside him for the second straight day. they attended this townhall style meeting with employees of a company that makes natural gas compressors. he will spend the next two days in ohio and will rally tonight with his son josh. president obama's wife is hitting the trail in his place. she was in leesburg last night. today her schedule includes two events in colorado. today the supreme court is taking up the hot button issue of affirmative action in college admissions. justices are hearing arguments involving a university of texas program that uses race in selecting about a quarter of its

incoming class. opponents say the university's practicing illegal discrimination by considering race at all. a texas student filed suit against the school after claiming she was denied admission in 2008 because she's white. the high court's decision could establish new limits on affirmative action programs at universities, or it could roll it back entirely. the ruling isn't expected until next year. the affirmative action case has been the talk around town today. joining us is whur's molette green. welcome back. >> it's good to be here. >> your listeners are watching the case very closely. what are they saying and what are their concerns? >> whor has spent a lot of time discussing this issue leading up to today's arguments. many of our listeners say, maybe, maybe it's time to sort of reexamine how affirmative action is being used on these college campuses in terms of its

admissions policies. but a great majority of our listeners say there is still this very real problem of access. not about -- it's not about whether or not african-americans or minorities can do the work, it's about gaining entry. many of them say there's the whites-only sign posted outside of too many college campuses in this country. >> your listeners have also been vocal about big bird. everybody's talking about big bird this week. a controversy still raging more than a week after the presidential debate. mitt romney is about to cut funding for pbs programs and now the president is running a campaign that mocks that. >> absolutely. >> what are your listeners saying about this big bird mess? >> you know, the people behind big bird and sesame street said, i did not approve this ad. the democrats, yes, are running this ad. many african-americans say, and supporters of president obama, say, look, we don't want any

reminders of that debate last week, because the president didn't do so well. even bringing up big bird, not such a good idea. but for our listeners, they're huge supporters of public broadcasting. howard university television is a public broadcasting station and runs programming that is geared towards minorities and those folks who would fall in that 47% category. and so they say plucking big bird's feathers, not sitting well with them. and in fact, pbs said cutting federal funding is not really a big budget-busting move anyway. >> okay. a lot of folks are worried about big bird, elmo and the whole group. >> yes. >> hopefully they'll get -- >> big bird is our favorite friend. >> indeed he is. and of course, the weather's changing, mollet, and you've got a big drive at the radio station. >> whur gets geared up for our annual coat drive. it's this saturday. we're going to be in two locations. and we really need the community to come out.

there was a surprise twist during an appeals court hearing for a female punk protest band. they freed one band member but upheld the sentences for the other two women. they'll be sent to a penal colony for two years. the band was jailed after the women went inside moscow's cathedral. the freed band member did not take part in the performance. she was thrown out of the

cathedral before she got her guitar out of her case. justin bieber's released an anti-cyber bullying video to resolve misdemeanor charges against one of his managers. the charges stem from a 2009 autograph session at a long island mall. police ordered the event to be canceled due to the large crowd. they say bieber's manager refused to help disperse the crowd, and that a message from bieber's twitter account caused chaos. charges were later dropped as part of that plea agreement. sarah palin said she's working on a new fitness book. the former alaska governor and vice presidential nominee tells "people" that she and other members of her family are working on a book about fitness and self-discipline. she said the book will be unique and motivating. there's no word on whether she has lined up a publisher for the book yet. a familiar face on msnbc is making a move to the "today" show.

would help. >> it's not working. >> but tomorrow, tomorrow is another day. tomorrow will be a little on the cool side. we do have a little bit of a cold front moving through the area right now. today, high temperatures approaching 70 degrees, with plenty of sunshine out there. some of those did hit that 70-degree mark. but a lot of us still a little bit on the cool side. we'll be a lot cooler by this time tomorrow. right now, currently sitting at 69 degrees at the airport. winds out of the west at about 7 miles per hour. looking at partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies across the region. 66 in martinsburg. fairly cool to the west. 72 in culpepper. the farther south and east you get, the warmer the temperatures are going to continue to be. i think we're in for a very nice evening. no rain to talk about. at least not now across our region. i don't expect any. i think this frontal boundary will be on the dry side. you can see the front, clearly defined on the visible satellite picture. look at the clouds, right there. that's the frontal boundary.

that's how close it is to our region. we'll see a few more clouds this evening from that front. once again, i don't think we'll see any rain from it. once it gets over the mountains it will start to dry out. nice weather ahead of the front. by tomorrow, high pressure settles on in. we see plenty of sunshine. but a very cool air mass. highs in most locations, only in the upper 50s to lower 60s. that's going to be a lot better than what we saw earlier this week with all the cloud cover. at least this time we're dealing with more sun. tomorrow afternoon, friday, more sunshine. another cold front moves through with another area of high pressure. we're cool out ahead of it, we're even cooler in behind it. friday night is going to be a very chilly night. and most of us, most of us, even some areas inside the beltway, will be in the upper 30s. so i do think we're in for quite a cooldown. tonight, though, through the evening, partly cloudy. a milder evening. temperatures 59 to 64 degrees. really nice. even if you need a jacket, still going to be quite nice to take

the dog out for a walk. temperatures 37 to 48 degrees. as we move through the day tomorrow, mostly sunny, cool afternoon, high temperatures 59 to 63 degrees. and here's your next seven days showing 65 on your friday, 64 on saturday. that coming in with plenty of sunshine. sunday coming in at 73 degrees. that's going to be the warm one. i expect winds on sunday to be between 15 and 25 miles an hour with higher gusts. still warm on monday ahead of the next frontal boundary that will bring in cooler weather as we head into the middle of next week. but 70 is a lot better than the 62 i think we'll see tomorrow. once again, 62 and sunshine, not bad. >> not bad at all. we'll take that. coming up on news4, new evidence showing lance armstrong was involved in cycling's most sophisticated and successful doping program. a new workout, this one's based on presidential politics.

straight day. they are in the crucial battleground state of ohio. romney plans to appear at a rally tonight with his son, josh. president obama has no public events set for today but his wife was in leesburg last night, today her schedule includes two campaign events in colorado. a warning today about counterfeit air bags. highway safety officials say it's possible that thousands of cars on the road have the bogus air bags. officials are urging anyone with a used car, or who had air bags replaced over the last three years to get that car checked at a dealership. there have been no reports of injuries so far. for the second time in as many weeks, police respond to a disturbance involving actress lindsay lohan. >> it happened early this morning at her family home on long island. and as greg reports, this time it involved lohan and her mother. >> reporter: the latest chapter in the seemingly never-ending

lohan saga played out right here outside the lohan's long island home. it involves lindsay, her mother and her father. according to nassau county police, lindsay and her mom were in a car returning from new york city early this morning. apparently the two got into what police are calling a verbal dispute. what they were arguing about is unclear. but during that dispute, police say lindsay called her dad, who in turn had a call placed to 911. there were patrol cars waiting here when the lohans' vehicle arrived. police did take a domestic incident report, but in the end made no arrests, saying there was no criminality involved. the media has descended on the lohan home, but there's been no comment from anyone so far. lindsay lohan has, of course, had many run-ins with law enforcement, the recent one coming in manhattan last month when she and a california man filed harassment charges against

each other. more of the media attention that always seems to follow lindsay lohan. in north long island, greg sergol, news4. in charlotte, north carolina, you can see a man walking across the street get hit. by an suv. the impact throws him about ten feet into the air. the driver seems to pause for a few moments, and then leaves the scene. incredibly the pedestrian was not seriously injured. and was able to make it to his home about three blocks away. we're learning more today about the doping allegations that resulted in a lifetime cycling ban for lance armstrong. the u.s. anti-doping agency says 11 former teammates testified against armstrong, and it calls his doping program the most sophisticated cycling has ever seen. investigators plan to release more than 1,000 pages of evidence today. armstrong has denied the

allegations. he says promises were made to his teammates in exchange for testimony against him. actor and former nfl player alex karas died today in los angeles. he was a defensive tackle with the detroit lions. he gained more recognition later for his acting. he played the role of the adoptive dad in the 1980s sitcom "webster." and he played a cowboy who punched a horse in the movie "blazing saddles." he died at home in los angeles. karas was among more than 3,500 players suing the nfl for head injuries. his family said he battled dementia as well as heart disease. get ready to bundle up tonight, folks. >> chief meteorologist doug kammerer tells us how much we'll need to bundle up. >> and you know what, it's not going to be bundling up as much tonight as tomorrow night. and really the next three to four nights.

a big delivery up in outer space today. the space x cargo ship called dragon docked with the international space station to drop off a half ton of supplies. this is the first private company to make a delivery to the space station. of all the items onboard, they thanked space x and nasa for the

chocolate swirl ice cream. the hatch won't be open until tomorrow, that's when the crew will get access to groceries, clothes and other gear. toyota announces another massive recall affecting almost 7.5 million vehicles. the recall is because of malfunctioning power window switches. toyota says the problem can cause the electronic window control to melt. this includes the rav 4, camry, hi highlander and corolla. they've issued a series of recalls that affected more than 10 million vehicles. the latest recall is the largest one issued by any carmaker since the ford recall back in 1996. we are learning new details today about apple's ipad mini. the guardian reports that the new device will use wi-fi than connecting to cellular networks to keep the price low. it will have a 7-inch display with a lower resolution than the current model.

the device is meant to compete with other affordable tablets like the google nexus 7, and the kindle fire. sources tell the guardian that they expect apple to announce the smaller tablet as early as next week. can you believe it, it's already time to start thinking about the holidays. can you believe that? >> it is a little early. even though it's chilly out there tonight. a look at the most expensive and extravagant gifts out there. >> better start saving up. and the mom who got so fed up, she went on strike.

plenty of sunshine. but then here's the front. very clearly defined on the satellite picture. you can see the clouds moving in along with the front. it will cool things down again for tomorrow morning. your low temperatures tonight, 48 in the district. 42 in gaithersburg. upper 30s back towards the west. this will be the warmest temperatures that we see for the next four to five mornings. so if you're looking at this going, it will be cool in martinsburg at 38, it will get a lot colder over the next couple of nights. tomorrow afternoon, temperatures much cooler. 62 in washington. 59 in martinsburg. 64 fredericksburg. a cool afternoon. that's coming with plenty of sunshine. you see the cool air mass here. and that does allow for our baseball forecast as the nats take on the cardinals again in game four. game four taking place at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. mostly sunny. and cool. take a jacket for sure if you're going to the game. temperatures around 62 degrees.

raccoons are famous for rifling through garbage in search of snacks. but one of the furry little critters ran into some trouble in detroit. residents noticed the animal on top of a telephone pole with a jar stuck on its head. so they watched and they tried to coax the raccoon down for hours. finally around 6:00 this morning, they say the raccoon came down, and they were able to get its head out of that jar.

the parents of a missing colorado girl are speaking out today, a week after the disappearance of their 10-year-old daughter. more than 100 police officers are working this case. but as miguel almaguer reports, all they've found of the girl is her backpack. >> let's have a moment of silence while we keep our lights in the sky. >> reporter: at a park where she often played, more than 1,000 gathered to pray for jessica ridgeway. the pint-sized 10-year-old seen in this recent home video has been missing since friday. >> she's my rock. i mean, she's all of our rocks. she's the one that when you're kind of down, she's going to come along and make you laugh. >> reporter: police say jessica was last seen walking to school.

her mother, sarah ridgeway, said good-bye shortly before jessica vanished. >> and i shut the door. and that's the last i saw her. >> reporter: when jessica's school called home to say she had never made it to class, jessica's mom, who works the night shift was sleeping. hours passed before she got the message. jessica was nowhere to be found. >> i made sure, you know, she wasn't in the places that i knew she wasn't going to be, but you have to check. she wasn't there. and that's when i knew. >> reporter: sunday jessica's backpack was found some six miles from her home. authorities have canvassed while after mile. tuesday the fbi was back at jessica's home, leaving with bags, police say her mother and father are fully cooperating. >> it's the worst thing i've ever been through.
